Links

There are a couple of links in this post that I highly recommend visiting. The first was sent to me by my sister at the beginning of the year. It's a talk given by the General Relief Society President (women's organization) of our church, Julie B. Beck, at a Women's Conference at BYU last year. She's pretty much a rock star. The whole talk is awesome but specifically the part about setting goals and prioritizing those goals into the categories of Essential, Necessary, and Nice To Do. It's perfect for setting new years resolutions - even though tomorrow is February. ☺

Instead of sitting down and writing down 85 goals I want to accomplish this year, I decided to do mini goals, adding one per week (or maybe fewer, depending on how long it takes me to master the others before adding another).

A couple of examples:
Make my bed every day. I've been terrible at this for a long time. As silly as it is since you're just gonna get back in it later on anyway, it makes a difference.

Make sure Justin is read to every day. This one is super important because I feel like he's been sort of neglected in that area because he's the fourth child. It's going great and he's loving the extra attention. ☺

There are plenty more, but I'm not going to write them all here. I just thought it was a less overwhelming alternative to accomplishing some of those "necessary" goals.

The other link you should check out is this one. It's a story that was voted one of the top ten in the 40 year New Era (church youth magazine) history. My older brother wrote it a few years ago, but it happened when he was a teenager.

January

Jackson and Sadie doing a Polar Bear Swim in our neighbors pool after I bragged about doing it at my apartment complex 2 years in a row when I was in college in Utah.

Jackson swearing ("holy crap"). I let that one slide. We don't have snow but the water is pretty dang cold.

The first Family Home Evening Justin has ever sat through without either having a meltdown because he's beyond tired, or asking 18,000 times if he can play Mario. It probably had something to do with Jackson's awesome lesson incorporating a chocolate chip cookie recipe with characteristics of a good person.

Just some genuine cuteness.

Thank You Mother Nature

I wish I had more time in the day. I know I'm not the only one. I'm just saying. At last look (10 seconds ago), my google reader says there are 672 entries on all my favorite blogs that I can't justify reading. I'm considering pulling a couple of all-nighters just to get caught up on everything. I'll just start with a blog post.

I'm sure you've wet your pants with excitement just waiting for the obligatory Christmas post.

Speaking of, can you spot the child with frozen pee on his pants?

And is it very obvious I cropped out the girls gross tennis shoes?

And can you tell that Sadie is freezing to death in her short sleeves because I made her take off her unmatching jacket?

All I wanted for Christmas was a photo shoot. And I got it, by george. And the fact that Justin has peed his pants like 2 other times in his life and decided to do it that day on the drive to the picture location did not stop me.
p.s. That photo is your Christmas card. No time, remember?

Christmas took place at one of our favorite vacation spots. We spent a week with Steve's parents and Laura and Jake. We did some sledding, tubing, Gatlinburg-ing, made like 50 trips to Walmart and toured the Biltmore House (um, AMAZING).

The best part was the surprise snow. There was some on the ground when we got there but at the end of the week we got near 12 inches within a couple of days. The first white Christmas in that area in 20 years. Our drive home was delayed a day until we were able to get some chains to get out. Thankfully it was not one of Ty's off days because apparently everyone else from Florida was driving home from North Carolina at the exact same time. FYI, that extra little seat in a Honda Odyssey is only comfortable for an adult for like maybe an hour, not 11 1/2 hours.

The kids got inventive and carved out a track in the snow down the hill behind the house and climbed into garbage bags to slide down. They called it "snow bagging". I also did it, hit my head on a tree and about killed my 35 year old self. There is no photo or video evidence so it will just be a memory. If I can even remember it.....what was I saying?
